Graffiti concern – open letter to Cllr Emma Daniel – 24th April 2018

To Brighton City Council via Cllr Emma Daniel,
Major concern regarding exponential growth of graffiti across our City

Chairpersons representing a wide variety of community groups across the city wish to voice their concern regarding the massive increase of graffiti and tagging across the city, particularly over the last twelve months. We are requesting leadership and urgent action from our elected representatives to address this issue.

‘Tagging’ alongside unwelcome ‘commissioned’ graffiti on public, private and even architecturally significant properties, has reached alarming levels. It is rarely painted out by the council or by property owners and, based on feedback from residents, our police service no longer respond to reports of active tagging. It seems clear to us that if there is an existing BHCC strategy regarding reducing and removing graffiti, it is failing. The result is that our historic and attractive city is becoming an eyesore as more and more areas become ugly, feel unwelcoming and even threatening.

It is unclear from the council’s constitution and committee structure where the responsibility for this area lies and what role the police should play. We therefore request that the Chairs of the three committees where leadership on this issue would possibly best reside, meet to agree who will take the initial lead.

We do recognise the severe financial constraints that the council is working within, however this cannot release the council from its leadership role in coordinating action and finding a resolution to this ever- growing problem which is fouling our city. Graffiti deters visitors, distresses residents and creates unsettling ‘no go’ areas where antisocial behaviour grows. It costs local businesses income and reduces the quality of life of Brighton & Hove residents.
We feel sure that a creative strategy can be developed.

This ought to be
· via leadership from the Council
· developed with communities
· on a city-wide basis
· enlisting cross-party support
· encouraging local people to play an active part
· setting out clearly the boundaries of what is acceptable for our city
· persuading property owners of their responsibility
· with strong city-wide publicity
· and a clear line on enforcement

We feel that this sort of approach can halt the graffiti scourge.

We have finalised the dates of our next Private Sector Workshops and I was wondering if a member of the London Road LAT would be able please to come along and chat to students about living in your area, what’s good about it and general advice about settling in to the area.

A TV opportunity! – from John Cook – Patcham Community Action Team #Brighton

Dear [ community-representing]  Colleague,

I have been given the opportunity to help in the making and recording of a new video (title to be decided) of life in our local communities.

The production team are very experience – having created and made full length programmes for the major TV companies in the UK and abroad – they will bring a wealth of relevant experience to the making of the programme.

The theme of the programme will centre about what is good in our communities (as oppose to the much negative news one constantly hears about) while at the same time presenting a balance view of some of the challengers residents face in their daily lives.

It aims to show that despite the grind of daily life, our communities are full of many wonderful opportunities that help 1,000’s of our local residents find enjoyment and fulfilment within a short walk of their homes.

I am told that Patcham will be at the heart of the programme but will include the wider community across Brighton & Hove.

If this project is of interest to you and you feel you have a story to share and would like to meet members of the production team to discuss matters in detail, please email me your initial thoughts and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
