LAT Chairs’ Forum #Brighton – 13th July 2017

15 or so LAT Chairs gathered at Hove Town Hall from all over Brighton and Hove to share concerns and  successes, and hear about items of common interest. Police, Council Officers and Councillors were in attendance.

Items of concern included – speeding traffic, drug dealing and alcohol-related disorder.

We heard about “Operation Rattle” – aimed at stopping the abuse of young people who are drawn into drug dealing for the financial benefit of older people who exploit them.

We also heard about City-wide Connect – aimed at helping lonely people have a better quality of life.

Official minutes will be issued in due course.

HMO consultation #Brighton – please respond by 10th September!

From Martin Reid, Head of Housing Strategy, Property & Investment

Improving housing quality in privately rented homes

The city has a growing private rented sector providing an important source of accommodation in the city. It can provide people with flexible, accessible and good quality homes. However, management and maintenance of the city’s private rented homes is inconsistent.

Consultation on the two schemes is taking place over the summer and closes at midnight on Sunday 10 September 2017. During that time we would like to give the opportunity for as many groups and individuals as possible to share their views.

The two proposed schemes are:
  • Additional Licensing Scheme: This would cover smaller Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) – that is properties of two or more storeys occupied by three or more people who are not from the same family and who share a kitchen, bathroom or toilet. The proposed area covers the whole city.
  • Selective Licensing Scheme: This would cover non-HMO private rented sector homes in 12 wards of the city where evidence demonstrates a clear link between poor property conditions, anti-social behaviour and private rented properties.

The wards covered in this proposal are:

  • Brunswick & Adelaide
  • Central Hove
  • East Brighton
  • Hanover & Elm Grove
  • Hollingdean & Stanmer
  • Moulsecoomb & Bevendean
  • Preston Park
  • Queens Park
  • Regency
  • South Portslade
  • St Peter’s & North Laine
  • Westbourne
